Benchings, backups, catastrophic injuries and a Cedric Benson sighting
Two teams started the season with high hopes, one team a Super Bowl pick, starting the rebuilding process with this years best draft.
Brad Childress and the Minnesota Vikings decided to end the Tarvaris Jackson project and opted to give QB Gus Frerotte the reigns to the 'purple' offense.
Tarvaris has been consistently boo'ed throughout the duration of his
time on the field. Although, some Vikings fans feel Tarvaris has not
been given a fair chance due to multiple injuries in his 3 short years
in the NFL, most feel that he is no Donovan McNabb.
Brad Childress was the QB coach for the Philadelphia Eagles during
McNabb's early years in the NFL. Childress who was very instrumental in
drafting Tarvaris, felt he could mold him into the next McNabb.
After an 0-2 start and Childress feeling a little warmth in the 'hot
seat', Childress had to make a change. This is not just a 'we'll see
how Gus does moment', rather Gus "Frerotte would be the starter for the
remainder of the season.", according to the Star Tribune.
The Vikings aren't the only one's heading into week 3 with a new
starter at quarterback, the Kansas City Chiefs will bring in a fresh
face. Tyler Thigpen has been announced
as the Chiefs 3rd new starting QB in 3 weeks. Brodie Croyle with a
seperated shoulder and Damon Huard suffering a concussion the Chiefs
are left with a bad team getting worse.
And then of course there are the teams that will give anyone a chance
or even a second chance. The Cincinnati Bengals come to mind....Chris
Henry has done everything but buy drugs for Marvin Lewis' underage kids
and still is welcomed back with open arms to the Bengals.
Now the Lions, desperate for a win but will settle for a close game,
are taking a chance on the "baggage" players. Cedric Benson has popped
up on the NFL radar, along with Shaun Alexander in the Motor City.
As an NFL team owner when do you draw the line and say "no we will not
give this guy another chance in the NFL no matter how talented yet
cell-block prone he is."?
As long as there are the Jerry Jones, and Al Davis' of the world we may never hear the word: NO.
