After a shaky first start in an ugly home loss to Oakland, is Matt Cassel's job already in jeopardy?
It has been suggested in the Kansas City media that backup Brodie Croyle has always been head coach Haley's number one option. However, a 6-year $63 million contract makes Cassel Scott Pioli's number one option, and thus the Chiefs number one option at quarterback.
"You've got to ultimately do what you think gives your team the best chance to win. And if that means another quarterback being in there besides Matt Cassel, then sign me up." - Chiefs Head Coach Todd Haley
Via the
Kansas City Star, Haley is asked multiple times about Cassel, Croyle, and their status. Haley's response always seems to favor that of Croyle over that of Cassel. However, Haley tows the company line by never directly suggesting who will be the starter.
What you can expect is that GM Scott Pioli will not allow Haley to start Croyle, at least not in the next few weeks. Cassel is Pioli's pick at QB. The Cassel trade was Pioli's first big move when he traded away a 2nd round pick to the Patriots for the QB.
There is no chance that Pioli allows Haley to bench the QB that he has attached his name and reputation on after only one week. Although, Haley is no stranger to benching the big contract QB in favor of the less popular guy don't expect that in KC....yet. How did that work in Arizona with Kurt Warner and Matt Leinart? Not too bad if your into playing in the Super Bowl.
If you see the Chiefs struggle over the next month, with a lot of their struggles coming from the quarterback position then you might see a switch at QB. Until then, don't expect any Croyle sighting's anytime soon. If the Chiefs start off 0-7 going into the bye, we might see Haley's guy starting in week 9.
