RE: Words of wisdom for a rookie
History is replete with college standouts who thought they were the next big thing, going to take the NFL by storm only to end up as another "What ever happened to"...and a bigger bust than the economy. I think Coach Singletary summed it best...he's not going to waste any more time on this issue.

RE: Chiefs sign 1st round DE - Tyson Jackson
It was a day to remember great players of the Chiefs past with the induction of Derrick Thomas into Canton and welcome the new generation of Hall of Fame hopefuls. The Chiefs training camp a the University of Wisconsin at River Falls was a great family outing and generated alot of interest from weary Chiefs fan who hope this is the beginning of something great. Scott Pioli's comments appeared genuine and reflected what we all know: this is going to take sometime. The players autograph session included players posing for pictures with the fans, signing T-shirts, etc. Both sides seemed to enjoy it. It was easy to find Matt Cassel, just had to look for the biggest crowd. Its funny...they always look bigger on television.
RE: Coach Haley drops Bowe to the bench
I hope Bowe (and others) realizes what Coach Haley and the Chiefs are trying to do to make the team winners. Having to play the entire NFC East will make this a very interesting season for the Chiefs. Its going to make men out of some and boys out of others.
RE: Tiger's loss might be good for golf and good for himself
Good blog. This was a great tournament but not as some golf analyst have opined..."One for the ages". I thought it was interesting the media would speculate on whether an Asian could win a major. Did they forget that Tiger is half asian? It is any harder to believe than a South African (Gary Player), Eurpoean (Nick Faldo), South American (Angel Cabrera), or a Fijian (Vijay Singh) winning a major? C'mon guys, get a grip!

Let's give Y.E. his due - he beat the best in the world straight up! He did not wilt or shrink under the immense media coverage that follows Tiger around on the course. He made two of the three best golf shots in very critical situations I've seen this season. The third going to Paddy Harrington in the third round. (I'm still waiting to see the elusive double eagle).

For Tiger, this is not like the 16-0 Pats losing the Super Bowl. No, this is that 13-3 team that loses in the first round of the playoffs, at home, after a bye to a team with a worse record (this actually happened). Tiger has lost majors before and will again (he didn't make the cut at this year's British Open and joked to the media about having extra time to prepare) but has never lost a major after leading all three rounds. Ok, now he is 14-1 and still the #1 golfer in the world. As someone once said - "This too shall pass".
RE: Vikings desperation has many faces
Michael Vick must be thankful that there is someone else for the media to focus on this season.
RE: Random musings on sports and other subjects
Nothing about #4?? Do we really need the news ticker giving us Brett Favre updates of every single play while we're watching other games?

RE: Cassel Could Miss Week One
Well, its certainly been an exciting draft and pre-season with the Chiefs....and what a week this has been! The last holdover of the Herm Edwards regime is gone; no Chan Gailey, no new offensive coordinator for the upcoming season and now Scuba's favorite quarterback will start in the last preseason game against the Rams. And how is Scuba's favorite quarterback taking all of this change on offense? According to the latest Chiefs Blog: "It's obviously different. The pace is different, how the plays are called, the tempo and just kinda getting used to how he thinks. We're still a long way off from knowing exactly what he's thinking on different calls. But the more you get used to somebody the more you can kinda anticipate what they're going to call.

"It's definitely different, the terminology or whatever, but there's no excuses. Just go out there and learn it, have some accountability and play."

But doesn't Haley want the plays to be faster?

"Yeah, get up there and get moving. Have lots of offensive plays. Makes sense, the more plays you have the better chance you have of scoring.

"It's just a different tempo, a different style of play calling. You know, every offensive coordinator is going to be different. This is the same case, no different."

What about preparing this week against St. Louis?

"Just preparing. Just be ready to go whenever you number is called and just go out there and execute the offense. Don't try to do anything too big. Don't try to go out there and try to win the job.

"Just go out there and play within yourself and whatever happens, happens."

Scuba is about to go into apoplexy; #4 is in Minnesota, Brodie possibly starting for the hometown team, and Tiger lost in his backyard....I'll never hear the end of it
RE: Should the NFL get rid of Cheerleaders?
If anyone wants to take away something from America's #1 sport, look no further - MASCOTS! Now there is a really thought provoking issue.
RE: Matt Stafford named starter for the Lions
Seems like the NFL is having a run on starting quarterbacks named "Matt". This ought to be an interesting season with Matt Stafford starting for the Lions, Matt Cassel starting for the Chiefs (hopefully) and Matt Ryan starting (2nd year) for the Falcons. Let's hope the Lions and Chiefs enjoy the same success with their new "Matts" that the Falcon's have enjoyed.
RE: Where does your team rank on Forbes 'List of Most Valuable NFL Teams'?
This is an interesting list. How does a team that hasn't won a Super Bowl in 40 years (Yes, thats right 40 years) be worth more than the team with the most Super Bowl wins and the team with the most NFL Championship?
RE: KC @ Baltimore 'Live' Blog
Great blog! Can't wait for Ron Jaworski's analysis on this game. His bias towards Joe Flacco is no secret. According to Ron, Joe is a product of that NFL quarterback factory known as the University of Deleware..."If you can play at the University of Deleware, you can play anywhere"...which just happens to be where Ron went to school.
RE: Raiders at Chiefs Live Blog
Another loss......at home....to a worse team

Next week - At Philly....Michael Vick...long day

Hey Vikings - it was only the Lions

Next week - Hey Michael it was only the Chiefs

Best wishes to Tony G - You're 2-0; hope you go all the way....you deserve it!
RE: Brodie Croyle to start?
It doesn't make any difference who starts if the the offensive line doesn't start blocking.....and how many yards did the defense give up against the Ravens? Get a grip - who the starting QB is is the least of their worries.
RE: TSD's NFL Week #2 Awards
How about the "If you blinked you missed it award"

Very first play of the Dolphins/Colts game - Peyton Manning passes to Tight End Dallas Clark - touchdown! Time off the clock - 12 seconds

Cameo of Tiger Woods congratulating Manning on the Colts sideline - 3 seconds

Al Michaels: We'll be right back after this message.
RE: Chiefs at Philly 'Live' Blog (2nd half)
I guess we need to get serious....next up the
G-MEN!!! The hits just keep on comin'
RE: Thigpen traded to the Dolphins
Last year he had more TD passess than Matt Ryan but went 2-14. Now he is going from one 0-3 team to another. This kid can't get a break.
RE: I had a terrible dream last night that the Chiefs were the worst team in football....
Okay, enough is enough. Let's get a grip.

For the Chiefs, the G-Men were, as one blogger put it "an eye opener...five sacks, over 400 yards of total offense surrendered and numerous communication miscues are just the start of a long list. Good Lord, the Chiefs went 2-of-15 on third down a week after going 0-for-11 in Philadelphia. That’s 2-for-26 on third downs over the past seven days. That’s a hard pill to swallow". But lets take a closer look:

First - The Chiefs have gone from the oldest team in the NFL to the second youngest in a span of 3 yrs. We lived and died with free agency and any near term playoff hopes have died along with it. That's bad front office management and ownership neglect pure and simple.

Second - Look at this years schedule -
Ravens, Raiders (have to list them because they beat usx2), Philly, Giants, Dallas, Redskins, Chargers (x2), Jacksonville, Steelers, Denver (x2) and Cinncinati. Only hope for a win maybe against Buffalo( who can't catch a break) or the Browns (who are about to break) but I'm not optimistic.

Third - No offense to our cross town rivals, but the Rams are a mess; Mangini is fining his players 1700.00 dollars for drinking water in practice; Oakland's Head Coach is being charged with assault---by one of his assistance coaches---during a practice!!!

You bring these wannabe youngsters together with these used-to-be veterans, change out the entire front office and coaching staff, give them one of the toughest schedules in the NFL their first year as a team and complain because they are not performing as a team?

I think our expectations are a wee bit high

RE: Killed again by the big play(s); Chiefs lose in OT
My home state of Missouri is having a tough year in football. On Sunday's ESPN NFL Countdown, Coach Ditka gave his weekly grade of an "F" to the entire state - said it speaks for its self.

Comparing the Rams and the Chiefs is like rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic. Where, according to ESPN, the Rams have started 0-4 for the 3rd straight year, the Chiefs continue to take "one small step for man" each game. They held Dallas to 92 yards rushing, and despite no offensive coordinator, Matt C had good numbers (23-41 for 253...Troy Aikman's professional analysis to the contrary).

How the Chiefs missed that tackle on Austin in overtime is beyond me...and who is Miles Austin anyway? Miles Austin is the Cowboy's 3rd receiver when Roy Williams is healthy.. that's right I said 3rd receiver. The Chiefs have alot of work to do staring with DB Maurice Leggett who will be forced to have a picture of Austin in his locker for the rest of the season. According to Doug Tucker of AP Sports "In dooming the Chiefs to their 28th loss in 30 games, Austin erased the record of 246 yards that Hall of Famer “Bullet” Bob Hayes set against Washington almost 39 years ago".....and speaking of the Redskins!

Next week will be interesting. The 2009 Redskins schedule created great expectations, but losses to two winless teams, (the Lions and Panthers) and now facing the winless Chiefs, Dan Snyder must be going through his ROLEDEX. I don't have any great expectations...the Skins are a better team than they appear...just not sure why they aren't playing Clinton Portis.

On a lighter note, the Chiefs played the 'Boys fairly well and the chin music I have to listen to from the office Cowboy fans should be minimal. Wade Phillips has to be concerned....for alot of reasons. The office Cowboy fans quietly murmured that Dallas has not been to the playoffs in 18 years - not since Aikman. Dallas (3-2) didn't play an 0-4 team very well. They were penalized 13 times for 90 yards. Romo overthrew several open receivers and when he did get it to them they were dropped. Dallas also muffed a punt and missed a field goal attempt.

Finally my thanks to the G-MEN!! 44 points on "da Raiders"...if your head caoch is facing assult with intent charges I guess it could be distracting.

Meanwhile in Denver.....and with Kyle Orten

RE: Dre Bly cries and Tom Cable MAY be in trouble. Drop your thoughts.
What....no Rush Limbaugh?
RE: What happens when you lose to the Chiefs?
Being a K.C. fan who lives and works in D.C., I can tell you its been an interesting 24 hrs. Cavalierman reflects the general mood of the D.C media who have been relentless. Yesterday's post game show started off with "Okay, who's fault is this?" Sitting in the dentist's chair today I heard 30 minutes of how can you pay 1 person 100M who's only on the field 25% of the time? (I cleverly shifted the discusssion to the Titans pointing out it could be worse and avoided a prolonged examination) The drive home was no better. Tuning in talk radio, the show opened with "Welcome to two hours of slammin' the Redskins". It was educational. I learned who Vinny Cerrato was and how play calling will be done by someone other than the head coach who apparently doesn't know the Redskin's system or the players. Imagining the road rage that must be building we stopped off and had dinner.
How 'bout those Titans??
RE: What happens when you lose to the Chiefs?
Evidently, the Redskins's new play caller is a consultant hired by the team two weeks ago - Sherm Lewis. He's been out of the NFL for 5 years and prior to getting hired was... according to Chris Mortenson...calling Bingo at a retirement home when he was called by the Redskins. Jim Zorn will have "veto power" in certain situations. I think I'll ride the train tomorrow.
RE: Jimmy Johnson and Russ Grimm
All in favor say AYE!!
RE: TSD Week #7 NFL Picks
As you all place your bets, this goes out to those who have to face the undefeated fan at the Monday morning office recap of the weekend games. Having endured 5 straight weeks of losses, I had to face the "chin music" of our office Viking fan. Its interesting how fans of undefeated teams feel they had something to do with the teams performance. They speak in terms of "we" did this or "we" doing that. But start losing and they turn ugly. All of a sudden its "they" this and "they" that. Well, that all changed last week as we (did I say "we"?)finally got one in the "W" column. Not Knowing what to do, undefeated man turned his rapier-like wit on the long suffering Redskin fan with a barrage of office emails:

HEADLINE: "D.C. Police are "cracking" down on speeders. For the first offense, they give you two
Redskins tickets. (If you get stopped a second time, they give you two Nationals tickets.)"

RE: Chiefs Suspend Johnson Two Weeks
The hometown paper reported that "Johnson was told Tuesday to stay away from Chiefs headquarters, though the punishment didn’t become a suspension until Wednesday night...."

Often, our anger can have consequences for those closest to us that we never stop to consider...

"Larry Johnson Sr. said that he vowed so many years ago that he would teach his children to treat everyone with compassion. He said he raised them to consider everyone equal, regardless of race, gender, beliefs or sexual orientation. He said it hurts that his son, Chiefs running back Larry Johnson, used gay slurs in public two times in 24 hours.

That’s just not who we are and not what we believe,” said the elder Johnson, 56. “It’s not how he was raised...It’s tough for me as a father.”

RE: TSD-NFL Week #9 Pick Challenge
As we start the back nine of the NFL season, optimism abounds in the heartland of America. K.C. fans are abuzz on the net that a new team rushing record may be set:

"In case you missed it, LJ is approximately 75 yards from breaking the Chiefs rushing record, so if he gets another 150 to 200 carries, he's got a shot".

....and from the head coach: “We’re always going to play to our players’ strengths”....

Ya gotta love it

According to the local media, it appears the Redskins are expressing interest in signing LJ.

RE: Tiger Woods: "I have let my family down...."
The modern day scribes who put Tiger (or any public figure) in the center of the media spotlight would do well to remember their history
...and...the scribes brought the women caught in adultery and made her stand in the center and asked Him "this women was taken in the very act of adultery, what do you say? He responded...he that is without sin among you, let him cast the first stone.....then the Lord stood up and said to the women brought before him, "Neither do I condemn you, go and sin no more".
RE: Chiefs' Derrick Thomas Makes Final Appearance Against Broncos on Sunday
Thanks for a well written article that brings back many good memories of what was and of an exceptional player who left too soon.
RE: Why You Should Still Start Tom Brady And The Patriots For Your Fantasy Football Team
It also helps that of their 4 remaining games, only one team has a winning record - Jacksonville, and despite a 1-5 road record (the "1" was in London), they play Buffalo and Houston on the road.
RE: Chiefs Defense Is Getting Worse, Clancy Pendergast Needs to Go
Good article but why stop with the defensive coordinator? Its been reported that the Chiefs have given up over 800 yards in their last three games. This includes offense, special teams as well as the defense. Add to that the Chiefs lead the league in dropped balls;39-40 going into yesterday's game. The question becomes, what top rated coaching talent would work for Haley? Only someone who thinks there will be head coaching vacancy very soon. There is more to this debacle than what we're seeing on the field. I'm glad this pain is almost over.
RE: Royals GM Dayton Moore Needs to Make a Move In Free Agency For the Royals to Win in 2010
Thanks for taking the time to write about this once proud but beleaguered franchise. Despite a remodeled stadium, its sounds as if they still have a long way to go.
RE: Six questions Redskins Nation has for Shanahan
TSD -
Well written as usual. Living and working in the NCR, its been interesting following the Redskins and Jason Campbell. As you know, he's played in three different offenses in five seasons. The local press appears to be starting a "save Jason Campbell" campaign. They're calling 2009 "Campbell’s best season" - completing 327-of-507 passes for a career-high 3,618 yards, 20 touchdowns, 15 interceptions while taking over 40 sacks.

He enters free agency at the end of this season. Should they re-sign him? Would he remain the starter under Coach Shanahan?

RE: Romeo Crennel Accepts Chiefs Offer

RE: NFL playoffs favor defenses thus far
TSD

Well written summary of this past week. When I think about the Jets, I'm reminded of the Coors Light commercial with Jim Mora skreeching "The playoffs are you kidding me, the playoffs?" Just replace "playoffs" with "the Jets?!" Although the Chargers looked flat and didn't play with a sense of urgency, I still don't see how "THE JETS?!" beat the Charges at home. Their secondary didn't look that dominate when you looked at the dropped balls and poor passes. I agree they have a good running game but not sure that and "emotions" will get them past the Colts...but I thought that against the Chargers
RE: The NFL overtime rule and the start of Summer-o-Favre 2010!
First, I agree with Mr Whinfield. It was a great game.

Second, its "cope" not "coup"

Third, go somewhere else to eat like Chucky Cheese

Fourth, You're watching waaay too much reality T.V.
RE: Kansas City Chiefs: Breaking Down Their Draft Priorities In 2010
Well written and good analysis. I would argue however that fixing the Chief's secondary is their number one priority.
RE: Walter Payton Man Of The Year: KC's Brian Waters A Winner Off The Field
Thanks for such a positive article. This type of charity works often get overlooked by the media and does not get enough attention by the NFL.
RE: And The 2010 Super Bowl Commercial Award Goes To....
Agree with the Betty White/Snickers commercial, it was hilarious. After that they were all down hill from there...don't think I want to know what Go Daddy is going to do next.

For the trivia buffs, who was the old guy that got sacked at the end of the Snickers commercial?
RE: Dustin Johnson's rough Sunday and tricky bunkers
Sorry, I don't agree either. Prior to the start of the tournament the PGA, as validated by CBS and others, highlighted this "obscure rule" to the players and press because of enormous amount of traps, bunkers, etc on this course. They even posted a notice about this in the player's locker room.

You must have quit watching after DJ was penalized, because the playoff round was tremendous despite Bubba Watson's errrant second shot. Taking his penalty stroke, hitting the flag stick and almost saving the round was great golf. It reminded me of the shoot out between Tiger Woods and Bob May.

For DJ's sake, I'm glad he didn't make par on 18 to win. My question is....where was his caddy?
